This page assumes you're using the browser client, although most of it applies to any client.
Typing something in and hitting enter will send whatever you've just typed as
speech, and will look something like this:
<IvoryDuBois> hello, world.
To change your nickname (or "nick"), type /nick followed by the new
nickname:
/nick Tope_Shoshoni
will change your nickname to "Tope_Shoshoni". Note that this new
nickname will be used in all channels.
Typing /me followed by a description, turns it into an action:
* IvoryDuBois waves.
If you type the first letter of someone's name and hit <tab> it'll fill in the rest of the name. If there are several people with names starting with the same letter, hitting <tab> again will cycle through them. When someone does this with your username at the start of a line, their name will show orange to grab your atention.
If you type "/join #Fighting_Cocks" (without the quotes) you will join a new channel, called #Fighting_Cocks. All channels must begin with #. If you're in several channels, you can switch between them by clicking on their names at the top of the window.
To close a channel, select the one you want to close, then hit the little grey cross in the top right corner of the window.
To open a direct chat, double click on the person's name from the list in the top right corner. This opens a private channel that nobody else can enter.
Please say hello when you come in. We may be lurking (logged in but not actively involved in a discussion), and if you say hello we'll know you're there, so we'll come and talk.
Please wait for an answer. The person you're talking to might have gone to get a drink or something, and may well be back in a minute.
Please try to keep any OOC chat in an OOC channel, and any IC chat in an IC channel. It helps prevent any confusion between the two, and the IC stuff flows much better when there aren't comments that don't exist in the middle of it.
